I wish there had been more knowledge and information on the teenage brain in the 1990s because it would have lessened some of my growing pains. As a teen, I was solidly rebellious. My rebellion came from the desire for new experiences, exploration, self-discovery, and being accepted in social circles, all underscored by a healthy dose of positive bias––all necessary aspects during adolescence to transition into an independent adult successfully. If the brain is more sensitive to environmental learning, what does that mean about my learning during adolescence? I often wonder what all the medications and traumatic experiences did to the neural connections inside my brain. To this day, I struggle with anxiety, trust, and abandonment fears. I believe these are directly related to my experiences as a teenager. Seigel (2014) highlights that the teen years are a time when we transition from “the literal thinking of hyperrationality to the broader considerations [of] gist thinking” (p. 70). I do think I’ve developed a robust intuition and developed in a manner that better prepared me to be on my own than some of my peers who experienced more typical adolescence. In the end, what if thinking doesn’t do any good. I can never really know. I’m happy with where I am now, and that’s all that matters. From a clinical standpoint, having a firm understanding of at least the basics of interpersonal neurobiology and the teen brain is critical for anyone working with or otherwise interacting with teens. It just might prevent additional trauma, misdiagnosis and could even save lives. From my perspective, the neuroscience behind the teen brain will color how I view teen clients and their experiences. It will influence treatment design, strategy, and focus. Combining my experiences with the mental health world as a teenager, along with knowledge of the unique challenges of teens from a neurological perspective, will open doors to help teens navigate these often chaotic years more healthily. I also wonder about COVID-19’s impact on the social needs of adolescents and what role technology plays. During the shutdown portion of the pandemic, teens across the globe were severely restricted in their novelty-seeking, social engagement, and creative exploration drives. During heightened environmental learning and neuroplasticity, they were stuck at home with their caregivers and away from their peers. Technology was the locus of teens’ interactions with peers for quite some time. Additionally, the pandemic provided limited opportunities for healthy risk-taking and dopamine-hit explorations. I was a planned pregnancy, my mother was not depressed, stressed, or anxious, and I was well attended to and interacted with during babyhood. Additionally, my maternal grandparents were close by, involved, and caring, creating a buffer of resilience for me when my parents encountered stress. I feel lucky to have been in an environment conducive to healthy development during this critical phase of life, and I developed a healthy, secure attachment style. There are a few instances where events could have negatively impacted me. What we see on the surface is a small percentage of what’s underneath. We all have a much deeper story down in our depths. I worked with watercolor and sponge for this painting, and I felt moved by the blending of color into the paper fibers. Much like the colors in a sunrise or sunset, the colors seemed to melt into one another in some secret dance. Creating this piece felt relaxing and right. I feel happy with how it turned out. Academically, I’ve studied Judaism, Christianity, and Islam throughout my studies, and outside of the academic arena, I’ve explored many of the Eastern belief systems. I feel more in tune with the cosmos and cosmic energy and describe myself as an atheist. However, I find religious beliefs, magical elements, and stories fascinating. Death comes for us all. The emotional part came during the plaster phase, while I was sitting on my bathroom floor with my entire face, mouth, and eyes covered in plaster strips waiting on them to dry. It made me think about my life’s journey, the different chapters in my story, and what masks I’ve symbolically worn along the way. From there, I intuitively knew how to decorate her to give her what she needed. The decoration process started by enhancing her brow and cheekbones with additional plaster strips and building her third eye. I also added some plain plaster to smooth out the fabric texture. After the plaster dried, I painted an undercoating of gold and covered that with acrylic black mica flakes to give her a mysterious, cosmic look. I collaged her inside with positivity and topped it off with gold flakes. Then, I added foliage and flowers for her eyes and forehead. Lastly, I added hanging hardware to the back. Regarding the mask herself, I think she “lives” in the cosmos, offering guidance, reflection, and spirituality. She tells me to listen more deeply to my intuition, which has never guided me wrong. I think she’s also connected to my ancestors and the wisdom of the collective unconscious. Thinking about the above quote and reading about ways to make art through social interactions and community, I felt inspired to create a community hope container. The idea would be to provide a large glass container in a public space, along with some paper, gel pens, and other craft supplies, and invite the community to contribute elements of “hope” to the container. These could be found objects, created objects, written words of hope, etc. Once the hope container was full, I’d seal it and place it in a public space to be seen and appreciated by the community. Then I thought, what might I contribute to a hope container? I created this “Hope Doll” in response. I made the doll from a mini clothespin, two small buttons, hope-inducing text, and a pretty pattern cut from a magazine. The text was wrapped around the doll, creating its body, and I placed the pattern on top as clothing. The two small buttons serve as the faces, front, and back. I felt anxious during the creation process because my materials were so small, and the doll wasn’t “perfect.” But in the end, I was happy with the doll and what it stood for. “Doll of Hope” (2023) Doll by Stephanie Guillen References: Alter-Muri, S. They can function as protectors from what is held or for what is held. In the theme of nature and ceremony, I decided to create a positive psychology style, "flourish bottle," housing little things to attract flourishing energy. The whole experience felt very much on the cognitive and symbolic level of the ETC as I shifted from one side to the other. I had to think through what I wanted to put in the bottle, what I had available, and what each would represent. I also noticed what surfaced emotionally for each item as I included it. In addition, I had to keep the overall theme of flourishing in mind and include the different life areas I wanted to have representation. My process started with choosing a bottle and the items in it. First, I added a single hair to tie it to me. Then I added turmeric for health, dried Baby's Breath from my wedding bouquet for love, broken glass to ward off harmful spirits, gold flakes for wealth, peppercorn for third eye intuition, sea salt for protection, dried pine from the Ohio land I grew up on for longevity, joy and roots/ancestry, dried Juniper from the Ohio land I grew up on for good luck and roots/ancestry, lavender for peace and calm, and lastly, burnt sea salt in Egyptian style for travel protection and to honor my mysterious trace Egyptian DNA. I corked the bottle, sealed it with wax, and added a golden ribbon for beauty. I decided to do a physical collage using magazines and gel pens for this exercise because I wanted to work with more structured media, and I was feeling cognitive/symbolic level energy. There was some tension in my chest as I flipped through magazines and cut out various pieces with which I noticed a connection. However, once I started piecing some of them on my board, the tension eased as a theme emerged that felt right to me. I listened to relaxing music as I worked and entered a flow state. I also asked the image what it needed along the way, and the answer always came to me. After I finished, I added a clear acrylic coating to seal and protect my work. However, during the drying process, the coating caused wrinkles in the paper, which disappointed me and took away from my happiness with the finished piece. I imagine future clients working with similar media might also encounter anxiety or disappointment. Still, the work helped me solidify the core of what helped me through past rough times, and I believe the benefits of the directive would outweigh any discomfort a client might encounter during their creative journey. In terms of my artwork, aside from the wrinkles, I feel happy with the piece and a connection to it. The Mo’ai represents me, looking to the cosmos for deeper meaning in the face of hardship. This artwork represents my connection to the cosmic realm, the insignificance of my problems (and myself) in the vast cosmic ocean, and my sacred uniqueness. It denotes intuition, the third eye, and believing that time will heal my wounds and that better days will come: no matter the hardship, this too shall pass. The pyramid shows up in much of my art. Its symbolism is still a mystery I’m working to solve. I’ve had an unexplainable love for ancient Egypt since childhood (and my B.A. is in Middle Eastern Studies), and I’ve only recently discovered that I have a mysterious .6% Egyptian ancestry in my DNA. I wonder about a collective unconsciousness that may or may not be playing a role. I’ve written my name in Egyptian hieroglyphics below the pyramid. The butterfly, a common theme during some of my most trying times, flies into the cosmos, symbolic of freedom and the beauty of change. I love Pat Allen’s (2016) open studio directive, which includes setting an intention, making art, and witness writing. I also love the concept of asking the art what it wants, needs, or is trying to say. Intention: I connect to my spirituality and listen to what it wants to say. Making Art: I felt compelled to work within the digital medium for this piece because of the spiritual element inherent in my intention. I thought I could better convey spiritual energy and make it more personal with photos rather than paint. As I layered in a self-portrait, my deceased kitty Astrid, and cosmic elements, I began to feel cosmic energy shifting from within to the artwork. I listened to a calming playlist as I worked. During the process, I entered a significant flow state and lost all track of time. Once I finished, I realized I was late for lunch and hadn’t even noticed my hunger. When I felt stuck, I asked the image what it needed and what it was trying to say. Each time, it seemed just the right answer came to me, and I made the appropriate adjustments. When I felt stuck, I was somatically dissatisfied with the work in my upper stomach area. However, I felt a sense of peace in my chest when I made corrections. Witness Writing: I like this piece and feel good when I look at it. My self-portrait across the cosmic background makes me feel like I am part of the image and that it is part of me. While I’m not religious, adding a church window that I photographed several years ago makes me feel like the image holds a rare glimpse into the cosmic realm. The photo of my deceased kitty, Astrid, brings me feelings of mystery, spirituality, and comfort in her energy. Her passing shifted my spiritual perspective as she died in my arms, and when she did, I felt a small ball of loving, playful energy hover in front of me before moving on. I couldn’t really explain it, nor had I ever felt anything like it. The birds in the sky extend the playfulness, as they are more child-like in style and speak to me of the child-like wonder and belief in more magical things that I lost somewhere along the way into adulthood. Much like a student boldly going into a new school year, I hope this scene sparks a sense of adventure. I wanted to go with a multimedia approach to make it livelier and more unique. I used collage pieces for the astronaut, sun, tagline, and heart. I also used shimmery watercolors to give it a cosmic and dreamy feel. Lastly, I covered the astronaut with some gold flake acrylic gloss and put an additional clear gloss on both sides to accentuate the shimmer. Affirmation: You can do it. During the exercise, I noticed an attunement to my current mental state, feelings, and physical reactions. Additionally, I sensed an emotional state of immersion in the fluidity of the watercolor. That helped me enter a state of flow and deepen my connection and awareness of my emotions. I also noticed some anxiety and sadness in my chest somatically as I worked through the painting. This exercise dealt with my positive feelings about finding a home, putting down roots, and feelings of gratefulness for the love and gifts passed down from my departed Aunt. After finishing the artwork, I noticed heightened connections between my feelings of thankfulness toward my departed Aunt and sadness for her death. The entire exercise left me with more awareness and healing. Hang somewhere where you‘ll see it during stressful times, and remember, you have a variety of helpful ways to confront your stresses. My anxiety-mending remedies: lavender, massage, cat purrs, moonlight, and ginger tea. What messages about money did you receive as a child? First, create your 'money monster' to help release the money-related negativity you hold inside. Next, create your 'money honey' to manifest abundance. It was eye-opening and also fun. Guilt, shame, and anxiety are common feelings that show up for me around the construct of money.
